The Dissonant Chord,
Inspired by author Thomas Mann's, book cover image, Doktor Faustus, and the quotation from the novel in German. “Höre den abgestorbenen Akkord...der dem wirklichen widerspricht. Jeder Klang trägt das Ganze, auch die ganze Geschichte in sich.“ (“Hark the fading off chord, reality’s antithesis. Every sound carries within it the Whole, the entirety of History within it).
The idea is that every object is a fragment in our World, opposing the reality of a whole world because we focus on it as a fragmentary detail (as in the painting). At the same time this object is part of a world history that in itself represents the entire history of mankind. The cello started out as part of a tree and its metal part of extraction from a mine. Then the music and its historical development including musicians, composers, institutions, musical paintings, writers, publishers, museums experts etc. A fragment that represents an entire World while maintaining its individual identity.
